Bariatric Surgery - Gastric Bypass Review by a Patient
From a past visitor to chasefreedom.com who had bariatric surgery:
This surgery should only be a last resort. It is far from a quick fix weight loss plan. Yes for the 1st year, it is easy weight loss. After that it is hard work. The surgery has been around for at least 20 years (different variations of it), it has come a long way and is much safer now (as all surgeries have improved). As far as supplements for the rest of my life. The only supplements taken are protein for the first 6 months and a multivitamin for the rest of your life. What is so hard about those supplements? I have always taken a multivitamin, so I don't see what is wrong with taking one for the rest of my life. As for the protein, you do have a very low calorie consumption the first 6 months and need the protein, or we lose muscle, which is not good. But after that we should be able to get all of our protein needs from the foods we eat. And you still have the head games of wanting to emotionally eat (eat when bored, sad, mad, so on). And it is not easy for a surgeon and/or insurance to approve gastric bypass. For insurance approval, you have to be 100lbs overweight, prove that you have been under a doctors supervision for weightloss for at least 3 years, and some require co-morbidities (states of sickness like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc.) Plus you have to have a mental evaluation by a psychologist to make sure you are able to mentally handle the changes you go through after the bariatric surgery. And you have to exercise and drink lots of water.
The dangers of gastric bypass itself are the same as with any other surgery. After the surgery, you get consultations with a medically licensed nutritionist at the hospital. Not just some guy hired by so and so to tell you what you want to hear. I guess what I am trying to say is that this is for people who are at least 100 lbs overweight. Most of us tried most weight loss plans, medications, and remedies. Otherwise, the surgeon and insurance wouldn't approve this surgery. And for most of us, because most plans aren't followed up with a real doctor like the surgery is, it is easy to go back to bad eating habits. I went to Jenny Craig, I have been on Weight Watchers 5 times(their regular plan once, their fat and fiber plan once, and the points plan the rest of the times), I bought 2 Richard Simmons plans, I bought Susan Powter, I have taken dexatrim, done Slim Fast, did prescription diet pills, even bought a ton of home exercise equipment (which I now use regularly). I have done the Atkins Diet and Cabbage Soup Diet, I have taken Thermogenics and other pills. Like I said, this is a last resort.
Bariatric Surgery or Gastric Bypass is not a quick fix and is not easy to do either. That is why a person has to go through all the medical necessities to even be considered for it. Well, I apologize for going on, I just wanted to get my point of view across. As for anyone thinking of out of the blue going to a surgeon to have it done just to lose weight, they should do as much research on it as much as possible. I did for over a year because I too thought it was drastic but in the end came out to feeling it was a safe option and now I am happy I did it.
