Body Rx Review
Authored by the man behind the sports supplement company Met-Rx, Dr. Scott Connelly, Body Rx is a body shaping, fat loss and muscle building program. It preaches what I call the "body building mentality" of weight loss and fitness. The basics of this program are similar to most body building regimens: increased protein consumption, decreased carbs, weight lifting, numerous small meals a day instead of 2-3 large meals, and supplementation which he is going to sell you (even though his book does not push them as others do). The main goal of the body building mentality is to speed the body's metabolism, which all of them do. There is no calorie counting or calorie deprivation, which is the hardest aspect of traditional weight loss plans. The program asks you to do a moderate amount of weight training, for an hour, four times a week, in order to build metabolism charging lean muscle. Aerobic exercise is discouraged as an inefficient burner of excess calories and often sacrifices as much lean tissue as fat.
If you can stick to it, Body Rx and the body building mentality of weight loss and fitness is an excellent choice. It focuses primarily on your health and dramatic lifestyle change. I commend Dr. Connelly on avoiding the temptation to sell his own products in the book.
But in the end, I am not a fan of weight loss and fitness for the cosmetic appearance goals of body building fitness. The curse of weight loss is not losing the weight, it is keeping it off in the long-term. Those who lose weight forever are people who discover lifestyle activities that sustain themselves in the long term. Activities like running, climbing, hiking, surfing, dancing, cycling, etc... These are the type of activities that lead to a new vision of life. Protein shakes, weight lifting, 5-6 small meals a day? It's just not sustainable and doesn't add something fun and exciting to your life. You shouldn't be discouraging overweight people from walking and running.
