Detox Diets: Another View

 

Detox diets (detoxification, body cleansing) has become quite the rage in the weight loss industry and our pop culture looking for a quick fix to our weight woes. These quick weight loss plans are usually liquid juice fasts with some combination of lemon or lime juice, maple syrup or molasses and some form of dry pepper such as cayenne. Solid foods are strongly discouraged on most detox diets. The "weight loss" phase of most detox diets usually last for a short period of time like a couple of weeks with breaks between dieting phases. The diets are highly restrictive and are almost always very low in calories.

These short term water loss schemes are usually deficient in protein, fiber, essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. The marketing of detox diets is often cloaked in scientific terminology that sounds reasonable enough for weight loss, but the reality is that they lack the fundamentals that all registered dietitians, nutritionists and doctors, recommend for good health.

Most detox diets are simply dehydration schemes. Since when is water a toxin?

Serious, long-term weight loss comes from one common strategy, exercise and healthy eating. The more entertaining the exercise, the better the long term success rate.
