Weight loss camps are also referred to as "fat camps." They are like recreational summer camps with lots of activities, but these focus on exercise for those unaccustomed to it, along with teaching basic nutrition and behaviour modification. The cost of so-called Fat Camps are steep, but if it leads to a fundamental change in the way you or your child thinks about eating and exercise, it could be the best investment you could make.
I have to commend the administrators of fat camps for making an effort to affect change in young people's lives, but the reality is that good intentions don't quite cut it. Weight loss- (fat camps) have two fundamental flaws:
1) They shelter the overweight person in an environment where they are forced to change their behaviour, eat healthy and exercise. When the ultimate scourge of weight loss is sustaining it in the long-term, forcing people to do what they couldn't do in the real world rarely works. If you don't learn self control without someone looking over your shoulder, long-term weight loss is almost impossible to maintain.
2) In regards to weight loss camps for kids, well, most kids learn lifestyle by example. Most obese kids have obese parent's. If a parent really wants their kids to learn healthy living, they are going to have to set the example first. If you allow your child to learn bad and unhealthy habits then you sentence them to a life of unhealthy living. That is not loving your children. Lifestyle change is tough, but it needs to be accomplished where we all live eventually, the Real World.
