5 Factor Diet: Another View

A celeb and gossip magazine favorite, The 5 Factor Diet is the brainchild of celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak. The deal is: each meal you eat should have each of the five elements protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber, fat, and fluids; you eat five meals a day; the recipes can contain no more than five ingredients; and finally the meals should take no more than five minutes to prep and five minutes to cook.

You must also exercise at least five times a week, in a combination cardio/strength training routine of five different exercises you do for five minutes each. There is a "cheat day" once a week, when you're allowed to eat anything you feel like.

The American Dietetic Association likes this plan, and we agree it's a solid and sensible approach to weight loss, which would work for anyone. Regular exercise is mandated. All of the recommended food categories are represented, consumed in appropriate proportions. From a nutritional point of view, all Five Factor really is is a healthy, calorie restricted diet. That and exercise are always going to take the pounds off. The only thing I would note is that there is nothing special or beneficial to the doing everything in fives - that's strictly a marketing gimmick. But if it makes conforming to this diet more interesting, then no harm no foul.
