Joy's LIFE (Look Incredible, Feel Extraordinary) Diet: Four Steps to Thin Forever

Author Joy Bauer is a nutritionist with a successful private practice in New York (Joy Bauer Nutrition), whose work includes being the in-house nutritionist for the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, an associate faculty member at Columbia University, the nutrition expert for Yahoo!, a contributor to both Parade and Self Magazines and authoring New York Times bestselling books. But many of us may be more familiar with her as the resident health and nutrition expert on NBC's Today Show, where she leads Joy's "Fit Club" - which is a support/maintenance group for individuals who've lost at least 100 pounds through diet and exercise, and who now maintain that weight loss with a Joy Bauer diet and lifestyle.

Joy's LIFE Diet is comprised of four steps:

1) Release: The first step is a detoxing week centered on banishing bad eating habits. Sugar, salt, alcohol, caffeine and processed foods are banned in this step, and you're to increase your daily water intake. You also start exercising regularly - 30 minutes of walking/low-impact cardio per day.

2) Relearn: For the next two weeks it's all about discovering how enjoyable eating healthy foods can be - so you're able to literally reprogram your appetite to want the healthy stuff. You'll continue with regular low-impact cardio, and incorporate a series or stretching exercises.

3) Reshape: Following the eating plan and staying committed to the regular exercise (the cardio, stretching, and now resistance training), you will be seeing results continually until you reach your goal weight.

4) Reveal: You've gotten where you wanted to go - but all that means is that the game has changed. You must now maintain your weight loss - and sticking with Joy's nutrition and exercise guidance you'll abe able to do it.

Meal plans: everyone eats three meals and one afternoon snack per day - and dieters are strongly encouraged to keep their meals on a time schedule, with a golden rule being that the kitchen closes at 9:00 p.m. The meals are sensible, standard healthy diet fare - "good" carbs, "good" fats, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, but it does allow for treats like dark chocolate. Bauer regards a healthy breakfast within 90 minutes of waking as essential to weight loss, weight maintenance and overall good health. For your dinners you should always start with a large salad or a lower-carb vegetable soup - a low-carb, high-fiber way to fill you up. You're encouraged to drink water throughout the day, and to be sure to have two glasses of water a half hour before lunch and dinner (again, to fill you up). Bauer does market her own line of foods - LIFE Snacks - which (as you'd expect) she recommends you incorporate into the snack part of your diet.

Fitness plan: Bauer stresses that the exercises are adapted to fit all body types and all levels of fitness. This diet is so solid and so sensible that it may seem like something of a yawn - but don't nod off yet. While you may be looking for something catchy, some original or different spin on losing weight and getting healthier - bear in mind that often, simplicity is the key to successful living.
