Loma Linda Diet Review

Loma Linda University is a Seventh Day Adventist religious institution. One of the hallmarks of Adventist beliefs is an emphasis on physical health and a healthy diet - specifically vegetarianism, adherence to kosher laws (no pork or shellfish products, per the Old Testament), and the avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, and even caffeine. Loma Linda's highly regarded Medical Center is the source of the "Loma Linda Diet Manual", a handbook for vegetarian nutrition. Loma Linda believes that a vegetarian diet can prolong life by lowering the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and colon and prostate cancers.

It's generally acknowledged that the typical western diet is lacking in sufficient quantities of fruits and vegetables. It's also generally acknowledged that adhering to a vegetarian diet - even modified versions which permit fish, or dairy, or both - requires discipline and dedication. It is a commitment. Though the makeup of some vegetarian diets may result in nutritional deficiencies - protein, iron, calcium - they can be modified or supplemented to ensure overall good nutrition. Vegetarian diets are approved by the American Heart Association, the American Dietetic Association, etc. as good eating plans for good health and weight loss and maintenance. As to Loma Linda's recommendations to avoid alcohol, tobacco and caffeine - well, there is plenty of scientific evidence suggesting that overindulgence in any and all of these things can lead to health problems. Consuming them in moderation - that's a personal choice that can be made exclusive of vegetarianism. The Loma Linda Diet Manual is available from the university website - it comes with a CD - for $95.
