Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover is another example of someone making a career out of making something simple, extremely complicated. Her basic premise is that overweight people should give up meat and dairy products and take up a vegetarian lifestyle. Most of us become overweight due to overconsumption of fat, which is what a vegetarian diet is highly effective at eliminating, but let's be practical: eating less and exercising more, which is the most common and best weight loss advice, is hard enough without completely altering the type of food someone has eaten for his/her entire life. It is simply not sustainable for most people.

She is correct in trying to get across the point, you have to change the way you think about food for the rest of your life, but her strategy is too severe for the average milk-drinking person who likes an occasional hamburger or a steak.

The most important aspect of weight loss is changing your mindset about food and exercise to a simple strategy of eating less fat and exercising more.

Despite these reservations, vegetarian diets are very effective at decreasing caloric consumption and especially saturated fat. They are healthy if you make sure to consume enough protein. They are certainly not meant for the short-term. Known vegetarian diets include Eat More, Weight Less, the Loma Linda Diet and Marilu Henner diet books.
