Miami Mediterranean Diet Review

 

Miami cardiologist Dr. Michael Ozner's version of the Mediterranean Diet doesn't present anything new or different, nor anything even particularly "Miami". What we have here is a standard, classic concept - repackaged. Which is not to say that the word "Miami" doesn't conjure images of taut, toned bikini bodies, sunshine and good health, nor that the Mediterranean Diet is something to be dismissed.

It makes sense that Ozner, a heart specialist, would advocate this dietary program for improved cardiovascular health and weight loss. Studies have long shown a link between reduced risk/symptoms of heart disease and diabetes and a Mediterranean style diet. Studies also show that obesity rates are lower in Mediterranean countries. A Mediterranean diet is one which is made up of cold water fish, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, lean dairy and the golden ingredient: olive oil. It is a low fat, high protein (the fish) and high fiber approach that can be as delicious as it is healthy, which makes it the rare dietary plan that is sustainable for the long term. (Moderate amounts of red wine are not only allowed, but encouraged if it's something you enjoy!) Because, by its nature, a Mediterranean diet is anti-inflammatory, it is also purported to be beneficial for reducing symptoms of inflammatory conditions like arthritis and IBS. It's a win all the way around.

Ozner's book makes a good case for the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, and there are recipes included. Exercise regularly in conjunction with a diet like this and you'll be healthier (and thinner) before you know it.
