Pedometer: How many steps each day?

A pedometer is a small, hand-held device that is worn on your belt. It simply counts and records the number of steps you take in a day, based on your body's movements. Some pedometers are analog devices that only measure steps. Some are more complicated digital models that track the distance you walk and calories burned. Beware though, the calorie counters are notoriously inaccurate and they are expensive. A pedometer is a great device to own. It's perfect for anyone who can't find blocks of time for exercise. The only real problem with pedometers is that they are often lost or dropped in water.

How many steps should you take per day?

For general health and reduced risk of chronic diseases: 10,000/day
For sustained weight loss: 12,000 - 15,000/day
For aerobic fitness: 3,000/day or more at a fast pace
