Phentermine Review & Information

Often used for a short term to treat obesity, prescription-only phentermine is in the pharmaceutical class of drugs called "anorectics" or "anorexigenics". That means that it is intended to act as an appetite suppressant. It is (theoretically) able to do this because it is a stimulant - an amphetamine, essentially - which fires up your central nervous system, raises your heart rate and elevates your blood pressure. Note that if your physician prescribes you Phentermine, it will be in conjunction with a diet, exercise and behavioral modification plan. Note also that scientific studies have not confirmed that Phentermine and similar drugs are effective at suppressing appetite. Studies show that patients treated with Phentermine and the like lose only a fraction of a pound of weight per week more compared to control group patients treated with a placebo.

Your doctor will make you aware that there are numerous potential medical side effects from taking Phentermine, which is why it will only be prescribed for a short term, and only if you meet certain medical requirements. They include:

-Increased blood pressure
-Irregular heartbeat
-Heartburn
-Insomnia
-Irritability
-Dry mouth
-Blurred vision
-Dizziness
-Headache
-Nausea or vomiting
-Stomach pain
-Diarrhea

Studies have shown risk to and negative impact on cardiovascular, central nervous system and gastrointestinal health. Additionally, Phentermine is a stimulant with a similar chemical makeup to classic amphetamines, which makes it potentially addictive and fraught with the symptoms and problems of amphetamine dependence.

Extreme warnings exist regarding taking Phentermine with other diet medications like fenfluramine (Phen-Fen) or dexfenfluramine (Redux), because the combinations have been shown to cause the rare but fatal lung disorder called pulmonary hypertension.
Phentermine is the drug's generic name. It is prescribed under the brand names Adipex-P, Ionamin, Obenix, Oby-Cap, Teramine and Zantryl. It was for a time available as Fastin, but that drug has been discontinued and pulled from the market.

Other brand names for products that contain phentermine, include:

Adipex P
Avaprex
Anoxine-AM
Mirapront
Obephen
Obermine
Obestin-30
Phentrol
Phenterex
Phentromin
Redusa
Panbesy
Phentermine Trenker
Oby-Trim

Commentary: The bottom line with diet pills and supplements is that they have side-effects which make taking them in the long-term unreasonable. Quit taking them and you re-gain the weight. There is the problem. If phentermine, or any other diet pill, worked in the long-term it would be impossible to avoid in our society and would be front page news.
