The Sonoma Diet Review

"The Sonoma Diet" is named after the wine-growing region of California. The plan was inspired by the Mediterranean Diet and more generally the Food Guide Pyramid. The diet focuses on eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, pasta, rice and seeds. Dairy products are consumed in low to moderate amounts in the form of cheese and yogurt. Animal proteins are included, but are consumed in lesser amounts compared to plant proteins. The regimen is all about appropriate portioning rather than measuring amounts or calories. It uses a "plate-and-bowl" concept, which means using a 7-inch plate for breakfast, and a 9-inch plate for lunch and dinner.

The "Sonoma Diet" is divided into three stages or "Waves." During the first 10 days (Wave 1) the focus is on significantly decreasing sugars, refined flour products, and other foods that are quickly absorbed. A quick burst of weight loss using this strategy is common due to the ketonic (water-loss) effect that is the staple of low carb diets.

Wave 2 is the primary stage of the diet, which will last until your target weight is achieved. Weight loss during Wave 2 is slower and more sensible, probably more like 1-2 pounds/week. According to the proponents of this diet, your focus should be on savoring your food and eating slowly.

Wave 3 is the maintenance program of the diet and begins when you've met your target weight or other health goals. You'll continue to enjoy Sonoma-friendly foods as well as occasional indulgences such as snacks and desserts.

The "Sonoma Diet" is a cleverly packaged portion-control diet that focuses on the basics of healthy, sensible weight loss. The only real problem I have with this diet is that it is all about food. Sustainable weight loss comes from a permanent lifestyle change that puts regular exercise at the top of the priority list, along with a general focus on eating healthier. The plan is offered in book form or by the new online program. Learn more
