The "South Beach Diet Supercharged" is a sequel to Dr. Arthur Agatston's 2003 blockbuster bestseller, "The South Beach Diet." The diet focuses on high-fiber, complex carbohydrates, unsaturated fats, lean sources of protein, and low-fat dairy products, which are the basic principles of the original. In this new book Dr. Agatston collaborates with Dr. Joseph Signorile, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami.
Dr. Agatston includes a workout regimen that complements the nutritonal aspects of the diet. The regimen focuses on walking and combines both high and low intensity interval exercise in a 10 week program, in addition to a shaping and toning program of 27 core exercises.
Phase 1: Eat lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy, unsaturated fats, and vegetables. No refined carbs are allowed. This phase is supposed to jump-start your weight loss, control blood sugar, and eliminate cravings for simple carbs. Lasts for 2 weeks.
Phase 2: Whole fruits and high-fiber whole grains are added while consuming proteins such as fish, shellfish, chicken, turkey, lean beef and pork, or soy protein.
Phase 3: Eating is not regulated and some simple carbs are allowed. Main focus is the workouts.
Included in the book are new meal plans, expanded lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid, the latest nutrition research, weight loss tips, and recipes.
The "South Beach Diet Supercharged" is going to lower caloric intake for those who follow it, hence weight loss as long as you follow it. The book does focus on decreased carbohydrate consumption in a healthier manner than other low carb diets. Certainly any diet whose focus is lowering bad cholesterol and at the same time helping you to lose weight, will greatly benefit your health. If you can stick to the South Beach Diet Supercharged, it is a decent choice, but that's the problem with any weight loss plan. There is no miracle in the South Beach Diet Supercharged, only a market-savy manner of packaging and selling some common sense advice about diet and exercise. The real problem with all these fad diets and bestsellers is that they lack the only variable that really matters, providing a motivation to keep the weight off in the long-term. That's why we love the strategy of basic nutrition with portion control and the addition of lifestyle exercise activities such as running, hiking, cycling, dancing, climbing, tennis, etc... These are the types of activities that you don't think of as exercise and add the kind of passion in your life that leads to long term success.
