Spirulina is an herbal supplement made from blue-green algae found in warm, alkaline waters, primarily in Mexico, Central America and Africa. Spirulina is rich in nutrients, containing 70% protein, B-complex vitamins, chlorophyll, beta-carotene (more beta carotene than carrots!), vitamin E, and numerous minerals. It's one of the only non-animal sources of protein in nature, and has been in use since ancient times as a nutrient source. It's alleged to be a powerful antioxidant, immune system booster, weight loss aid, and cholesterol lowering agent. It's sold in powder, tablet and flake form, and is commonly marketed online and in health food stores as a natural appetite suppressant. There is no published research or evidence to support the appetite suppression/weight loss claim, but spirulina does contain many essential nutrients, so it can be a beneficial supplement with regard to the other claims. One warning regarding spirulina is that if consumed in excessive amounts, it could lead to toxic levels of certain nutrients in your bloodstream.
