Synephrine The "ephedra-free" ingredient Information and Review
Synephrine is the main "active" compound
found in the fruit of a plant called Citrus aurantium. It is a common
substitute for ephedrine in diet pills that are labeled "ephedra-free."
The fruit is also known as zhi shi, green orange, sour orange or
bitter orange in other parts of the world. Synephrine is chemically
very similar to the ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine found in many
OTC cold/allergy medications and in weight loss and energy supplements
which contain Ma Huang. As it stands now, citrus aurantium extract exists
as one of the most over-hyped ingredients on the weight loss scene.
There are some interesting theories on how it might work to increase
metabolic rate and promote weight loss, but most are couched in
pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo and none are backed by any credible
scientific evidence of effectiveness in humans. Both isolated synephrine and citrus aurantium extract
have been shown to raise blood pressure in animal studies. Until
more studies are conducted on the safety, pharmacology and efficacy
of citrus aurantium as a thermogenic supplement, it should be treated
as an ingredient with mild stimulant properties and should be avoided
by individuals with cardiovascular concerns such as hypertension.
Commentary: The bottom line with diet pills and supplements is that they have side-effects which make taking them in the long-term unreasonable. Quit taking them and the weight almost always comes back. There is the problem. If any diet pills worked in the long-term they would be sold by giant pharmaceutical companies, not multi-level marketing companies, midnight infomercials and obscure websites. With the epidemic of obesity in the United States they would be impossible to avoid in our society and would be front page news. With so many weight loss options available, it's hard to know what to do. The reality of popular diet products and programs is that few work in the long term because they don't focus on the sustainable strategies of balanced nutrition, exercise and personal motivation. But don't be discouraged, there are good plans out there that can help you achieve your goals. |
