The Ultimate Tea Diet: Another View

 

The recent bestseller "The Ultimate Tea Diet: How Tea Can Boost Your Metabolism, Shrink Your Appetite, and Kick-Start Remarkable Weight Loss," capitalizes on the increasing popularity of tea as a health and weight loss aid. Authored by Mark "Dr. Tea" Ukra, owner of a California tea emporium and a self-styled tea expert, the book instructs you to find a (caffeinated, hold the sugar) tea you enjoy, drink it all day in conjunction with a healthy food plan and watch the pounds disappear.

Dr. Tea claims that tea can “help us lose weight, reduce our cravings for sweets, suppress our appetite, increase our insulin’s effectiveness, lower our cholesterol, and stimulate thermogenesis, which helps the body burn fat for energy.” While these claims are not backed up with much evidence, it is true that tea contains high levels of antioxidants, which are proven to be good for the body. (Antioxidants act as detoxifiers in our bloodstreams by attacking the free radicals - toxic stuff - which damages our cells. Studies in rats definitively prove that those with higher levels of antioxidants in the blood suffer less cancers.) As to weight loss, the pitch is that caffeine stimulates the metabolism, l-theanine (an amino acid found in tea) neutralizes the jittery effects of the caffeine and that EGCG (another chemical in tea) accelerates fat burning. Again, this claim is not proven...but all things being equal there is no harm in drinking vast quantities of tea - in terms of calories it's certainly the far wiser weight managment option than sodas or juices - and if you follow a healthy, lower cal/lower fat/high fiber eating plan like the one outlined in the book (and you exercise!) you will undoubtedly lose weight.

Tea drinkers, I think, will enjoy this book regardless of whether they lose weight. Dr. Tea, whose family has been in the tea business for years, explains the art of making a good cup of tea, instructs on how to choose teas for you, and how to cook with tea to enhance the tea diet food experience. (The recipes look delicious.) He also expounds on the the history of tea, peppers his prose with famous quotes and remains tirelessly upbeat and encouraging about taking control of your health.
