Xenical (Orlistat) Review

Xenical, the marketing trade name for Orlistat, is a prescription drug that reduces the amount of fat that can be absorbed during digestion by up to thirty percent. Xenical works by inhibiting pancreatic lipase, an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides in the gastro-intestinal tract. Without this enzyme, triglycerides from the food you eat are prevented from being converted into absorbable fatty acids and are excreted without being digested. Only very small amounts of Xenical are absorbed. The primary effect is lipase inhibition within the gastro-intestinal tract after oral doses of the drug. The primary route of elimination from the body is through the feces.

Xenical can be an effective long-term treatment for obese people, but causes significant digestive distress and diarrhea in those who take it, especially for those who do not follow a low fat, low calorie diet.

Xenical takes a short cut to weight loss, without focusing on a healthy diet and exercise. Ask your doctor for more information. The drug is now being sold over-the-counter under the brand name "Alli" .
