Xenical (Orlistat) approved for OTC

The FDA has authorized the over-the-counter sale of the weight-loss pill Xenical, produced by GlaxoSmithKline, previously only purchased with a prescription. It is the first over-the-counter diet drug to win approval from the Food & Drug Administration. The OTC version is called "Alli."

Xenical or Alli is a drug that reduces the amount of fat that can be absorbed during digestion by up to thirty percent. It does so in the intestinal track. Xenical can be an effective long-term treatment for obese people, but causes significant diarrhea in those who don't follow a low calorie diet.

Commentary: This is a diet pill has the unpleasant side-effects, including intestinal discomfort. Diet pills don't work in the long-term due to their side-effects. Quit taking the pills and weight almost always comes back. Sorry, but regular exercise and sensible diet are still the only long term solution to being overweight. Choose one of the sensible online programs, add regular exercise and you'll have all the ingredients of the best possible option.
